A One-Day Workshop in Stowmarket With Ian Watson

Everyone is looking for a way to reduce the stress in their lives and experience a greater sense of ease, contentment and joy. The problem is, there is a widespread misunderstanding about what really causes us to feel the way we do, a misunderstanding that is shared even by the so-called experts.

The result of this misunderstanding is that we have learned to attribute our feelings to outside circumstances, people and past events, and we expend a lot of energy trying to change those external factors in order that we can feel better.

Common examples would be:

  • If I had more money, I would feel more secure
  • If my work environment was better, I would feel less stressed
  • If my partner/boss/relatives behaved differently, I would be happier
  • If my past hadn't been so difficult, I would have an easier time in the present
  • If my children were grown up, I wouldn't have to worry all the time

I would like to share with you a simple understanding known as the Three Principles that shows you where all of your feelings actually come from, and reveals the depth of well-being and resilience you have available to you on the inside at all times.

As you begin to see this for yourself, your life will never be the same again. You will re-discover the natural ease that comes with knowing that your well-being exists independently of outside circumstances, and that there is nothing in the past or the future that can make you feel bad.

If you have struggled with feelings such as anxiety, sadness, loneliness, guilt, frustration or overwhelm you will be relieved to know that all of these feelings are natural and temporary, and that you have the inbuilt capacity to feel at peace within yourself once again.

As this understanding becomes realized, you will learn to navigate through life with greater ease, less stress and a happier, healthier outlook on life - without needing to work on yourself or remembering to practice any techniques.

What will we learn?

During this year long personal development programme we will do as nature does……

Nature reminds us that life is good and has a magical way of evaporating our busy thoughts. It opens us up to the joy of being alive and a gratitude for all that it offers us in our experience of life and living.

The seasons reflect different aspects of our humanness and provide a rich seam of inspiration for our personal journey of exploration. We will use the cycles and seasons of nature as a framework to guide our time together and inspire a deeper connection to our own true nature.

The four seasonal two-day retreats will be woven around the following themes.....

Autumn

First, we will slow things down a little and create space for reflection. We will take time to connect with our true nature, in nature.

We will explore the spiritual and psychological principles that underpin how life works and create a foundational understanding for our journey together through the seasons. Taking time to connect to ourselves, each other and the beauty of nature.

Autumn symbolizes the balance between light and darkness, releasing and letting go of the old, preparing for the winter and creating time for self reflection.

Waking up to who we are requires letting go of who you imagine yourself to be.

This is the perfect time to set our intentions together for the year ahead and make personal commitments to the things we would love to create and the old habits we want to leave behind. Taking our inspiration from the beauty and wisdom around us, including each other.

 

Winter

Our second retreat together will take place in the winter, in the space before growth. This is the time for rest and quiet curiosity, to become comfortable in the not knowing and the stillness/nothingness that precedes creation and new life.

We will explore how rest and rejuvenation is essential to the cycle of life, for the creation of new energy and how the ebb and flow from formless to form shapes our resilience. We will take a moment to pause in our own personal experience of nature and what this can teach us about ourselves.

This is the ideal time to just be present. To listen. To go deeper. The perfect practical space to prepare the ground for new projects, commitments and actions. This quiet place of creative incubation will bring us questions, ideas and thoughts that support our intentions. We can observe them and allow them to germinate in preparation for the new energy and green shoots of spring.

 

Spring

In our third retreat we will embrace the exuberant energy of spring-time, opening ourselves up to the possibilities beyond. This natural time of new growth reminds us of our own creative potential and our capacity to have new thoughts and ideas in any moment.

We will nurture our intentions and the ideas we have been quietly incubating over the winter months as we have rested and renewed. We can take action to give back to nature those things that have been getting in the way of us healing relationships, letting go of bad habits or realizing our passions and creative projects. Taking the time to more deeply understand and harness our creative power and its presence in every moment.

Together we will nurture our new seedlings, ideas, insights and support each other into bringing them to fruition. Just as the plants and trees are interdependent, so are we. Harnessing our collective creative potential and the spirit that supports that growth, to birth our projects, heal relationships and accelerate our natural productive capacity.

 

Summer

Our final retreat will be in the summer season of blue skies and clear waters (hopefully!), where nature is in full bloom. For us gardeners it is a time to stand back and enjoy the fruits of our labour, alongside the ongoing watering and nurturing to keep the plants healthy and vibrant.

There is a feeling of space and sense of achievement that our commitment to taking care of the soil, to planting, to pruning, to cutting back the old, creates a well nourished garden.

As we come together we will celebrate our shared journey, take a look at the path we have traveled and reflect on the insights and collective wisdom that has contributed to our experience.

We can take all the learning, discoveries and observations and go forward into the next year armed with a new sense of clarity and both a spiritual and practical understanding of ourselves as human beings and our innate capacity for wisdom, peace and well-being.

We are nature. Being clear that there is an ebb and flow annually, seasonally and in every moment creates a certainty that we can navigate the undulations of life and harness its natural rhythms to support us to live, love and create our most fulfilling lives.

It is this wisdom, the wisdom of nature and our innate capacity to live a connected, creative and rich experience of life that this group programme will explore and celebrate.

Where and When?

Our journey together will be in the beautiful setting of Dartington Hall in Devon with lots of opportunity to explore the beauty of nature on the grounds of the estate. We'll eat wholesome, locally-grown organic food and enjoy the space to slow down whilst connecting with yourself and others in an intimate group setting.

We will also have the joy of experiencing the beautiful gardens and estate in all the four seasons which will bring us closer to the nature of life and how this creates inspiration for our personal journey and hopes for the programme.

In between the retreats we will also meet six times virtually as a group to reflect and share insights and discoveries and provide space to ask questions and gain support for your own creative projects, challenges and new ideas.

What Kids are Up Against

There is growing concern regarding the mental and emotional health of youngsters in today's society. It is now being increasingly recognized that children are 'growing up too quickly' in some respects.

Many kids are struggling to keep up with the demands of schoolwork, after-school activities and peer groups to name a few. While some children may thrive amidst a busy schedule, others may feel overwhelmed or disheartened. They can struggle with feelings of low confidence, anxiety, loneliness or even depression.

Increasing numbers of youngsters are struggling with stressful thoughts and feelings. Many end up developing unhealthy coping strategies and eventually with more serious habits such as developing eating disorder, self-harming or using recreational substances.

All of these are simply attempts to find relief from feelings of distress and to regain a sense of inner balance and well-being.

Can We Help Children Feel Better About Themselves and Access Their Innate Resilience?

Despite the challenges inherent in modern life, the good news is that children today are naturally just as resilient as they have always been.

When you understand the fundamental principles that underlie our psychological functioning, you will be able to reinforce and draw out the wisdom and well-being available to all children.

As children begin to feel more empowered, capable and resilient on the inside, their thoughts and feelings about themselves and others naturally become more positive.

As a result, self-destructive and reactive behaviour patterns become less compelling. They discover they have resources available to them that they may have overlooked previously.

When the adults around children gain a deeper understanding of the connection between thought, feeling and behaviour, youngsters seem to catch on to it quickly and easily.

About the Facilitators

Dr Rani Bora has recently moved from her full time NHS position as a Consultant Psychiatrist to pursue her passion in sharing The Principles of Innate Health to a wider audience.  She is also a well-being coach and speaker. She has conducted several training and coaching workshops for both staff and patients on the concept of coaching and recovery, stress and anxiety management and psycho-education.  She was the local Clinical Lead for Schwartz Center Rounds for two years, encouraging reflective clinical practice and supporting staff to provide compassionate care. Rani believes that teaching children and the youth of today about their innate health and resilience is paramount.  She is the proud mother of two young girls aged 7 and 11.

Ian Watson is a highly experienced trainer and facilitator who has worked in the field of well-being and personal transformation since 1988. He is one of the leading teachers of the Principles of Innate Health in the U.K., and has taught resiliency and well-being programmes to business leaders and their staff, teachers, healthcare workers and other professionals in the U.K. and overseas. Ian is a faculty member of the Innate Health Centre in London, delivering well-being and resiliency programmes to schoolchildren of various ages. The State We're In

In the UK, at least one in four people will experience some kind of mental health problem in any given year. The Office for National Statistics estimates that one in ten children (age 5 - 16) has a clinically diagnosed mental health disorder such as anxiety, depression or some kind of behavioural issue. One out of every twelve to fifteen children are thought to deliberately self-harm.

In 2014, over 57 million prescriptions were issued for antidepressants in England alone - a 500% increase since 1992. Around 1.2 million prescriptions were issued for children to treat 'hyperactivity disorders'. Psychiatric drugs are now routinely prescribed to treat an ever-widening range of problems including weight control, sleep disorders, low confidence and mood swings.

The provision of mental health services currently costs around £7 billion annually in the UK, and the wider economic costs are estimated to be at least £70 billion annually.

Against this backdrop of ever-increasing numbers of people suffering despite the widening range of treatments available, it is becoming apparent that something fundamental to our understanding of mental and emotional health has been largely overlooked.

Ian’s personal life journey of seeking practical solutions and spiritual insight to the human condition makes him a perfect facilitator of the Three Principles understanding.

A New Paradigm for Understanding Mental & Emotional Health & Resilience

In 1973, a man named Sydney Banks uncovered the 'missing link' in our understanding of how our psychological and emotional experience of life gets created. Through his own direct insight, Sydney Banks was freed from chronic insecurity and was able to articulate the principles that underpin mental and emotional health in a way that others could grasp and thereby free themselves from their own suffering and life struggles.

The radical new understanding that Sydney Banks stumbled upon began to spread via word of mouth under various names, including Health Realisation, Psychology of Mind, Innate Health and the Inside-Out Paradigm. Today, it is most commonly referred to as the Three Principles of Mind, Thought and Consciousness, and it continues to transform people's lives throughout the world.

In contrast to the complexity and contradictory nature of so many existing psychological theories, the Three Principles provide a simple, consistent foundation that explains what psychological and emotional well-being and resilience really is. It reveals the simple fact that everyone has access to well-being and wisdom at all times, and we cannot lose our innate mental health, although we may well lose sight of it.

What This New Paradigm Means

Some of the key implications that arise from an understanding of these principles include:

  • Everyone has innate well-being and resilience on the inside, no exceptions
  • Peace of mind and well-being is the natural state of all human beings
  • The past has no power to create ongoing psychological suffering
  • True, lasting psychological and emotional healing occurs via insight and a shift in consciousness, not from techniques, practices or prescriptions
  • Changes in body chemistry are a reflection of a person's state of mind, not the cause of it
  • Life events and circumstances cannot create stressful feelings in and of themselves
  • Other people have no power to create your feelings - only you can do that!
  • Destructive behaviours and habits arise in response to internal distress, and fall away naturally by themselves when inner peace is restored

After a lifetime working in the field of well-being and personal transformation, the Three Principles understanding transformed and simplified my work, and has formed the basis of all my workshops, trainings and individual consulting work since 2011. From an early age we begin to formulate ideas about ourselves which, over time, creates our personality or self-image, and it appears to be permanent, real and true. Everybody does it whether they mean to or not. What we often overlook is the way that we limit ourselves based on these ideas and the way we begin to believe these ideas are true. So even though our thoughts about ourselves can and do change, there are many we hold on to and abide by in a way that creates a limitation for ourselves. Are there things you think you cannot do well for some inbuilt reason?

In this talk we will be exploring what lies beyond our ideas about who we are, our thought-created personality. All the ideas and assumptions aside, what can we discover about our potentialthat we would otherwise overlook? What is the difference between what is possible for us and what we think is possible? We see the significance of this in schools for students that think they cannot begood in a certain subject. In what ways are we doing that in our adult lives?

Unfortunately there is a widespread misunderstanding about where our feelings actually come from, and what we need to do (or stop doing) in order to feel differently.

The result of this misunderstanding is that we have learned to attribute our feelings to outside circumstances, people and past events, and we expend a lot of energy trying to change those external factors in order that we can enjoy an easier life experience.

Common examples would be:

  • If I had more money, I would feel more secure
  • If my work environment was better, I would feel less stressed
  • If my partner/boss/relatives behaved differently, I would be happier
  • If my past hadn't been so difficult, I would have an easier time in the present
  • If my children were grown up, I wouldn't have to worry all the time

I would like to share with you a simple understanding that shows you where all of your feelings actually come from. Once you start to see this for yourself, your life will never be the same again. You will re-discover the natural ease that comes with knowing that your innate well-being and peace of mind exists independently of outside circumstances, and that there is nothing in the past or the future that can make you feel bad.

A one-day event in Devon with Ian Watson in collaboration with Coaching Connect

Ian Watson and Coaching Connect are collaborating to provide a refresher day for coaches using a principles-based approach. This will be a perfect opportunity for coaches (who are already using the 3Ps in their work) to discuss case-studies and to further learn how to share a principles-based approach with clients.

Many coaches find they go through a transition period with the 3Ps. In the past they often have had training in a variety of tools and techniques. When they discover the 3Ps they want to share their new understanding in an authentic way, however they are sometimes not quite ready to ditch all their old ways of working.

During this day we will be exploring questions like:

  • What are the common stumbling blocks when sharing a 3P approach?
  • What if my client doesn't 'get it'?
  • What if I'm feeling a bit 'wobbly' - can I still coach?
  • How can I maximise my impact as a 3P-coach?

You don't need to be a coach to enjoy this day. If you are sharing the principles with friends and family (or as part of your work) then you will find this is a useful development of your understanding and learning.

Everyone is looking for a way to reduce the stress in their lives and experience a greater sense of ease, contentment and joy. The problem is, there is a widespread misunderstanding about what causes us to feel the way we do, a misunderstanding that is shared even by the so-called experts.

The result of this misunderstanding is that we have learned to attribute our feelings to outside circumstances, people and past events, and we expend a lot of energy trying to change those external factors in order that we can feel better.

Common examples would be:

  • If I had more money, I would feel more secure
  • If my work environment was better, I would feel less stressed
  • If my partner/boss/relatives behaved differently, I would be happier
  • If my past hadn't been so difficult, I would have an easier time in the present
  • If my children were grown up, I wouldn't have to worry all the time

I would like to share with you a simple understanding that shows you where all of your feelings actually come from. Once you start to see this for yourself, your life will never be the same again. You will re-discover the natural ease that comes with knowing that your well-being exists independently of outside circumstances, and that there is nothing in the past or the future that can make you feel bad.

As this understanding becomes realized, you will learn to navigate through life with greater ease, less stress and a happier, healthier outlook - without needing to work on yourself or remembering to practice any techniques.

The State We're In

In the UK, one in four people will experience some kind of mental health problem in any given year. The Office for National Statistics estimates that one in ten children (age 5 - 16) has a clinically diagnosed mental health disorder such as anxiety, depression or some kind of behavioural issue. One out of every twelve to fifteen children are thought to deliberately self-harm.

In 2014, over 57 million prescriptions were issued for antidepressants in England alone - a 500% increase since 1992. Around 1.2 million prescriptions were issued for children to treat 'hyperactivity disorders'. Psychiatric drugs are now routinely prescribed to treat an ever-widening range of problems including weight control, sleep disorders, low confidence and mood swings.

The provision of mental health services currently costs around £7 billion annually in the UK, and the wider economic costs are estimated to be at least £70 billion annually.

Against this backdrop of ever-increasing numbers of people suffering despite the widening range of treatments available, it is becoming apparent that something fundamental to our understanding of mental and emotional health has been largely overlooked.

Some Commonly-Held Assumptions

It is important to keep in mind that every kind of psychological treatment, intervention or self-help technique is based upon a set of assumptions about what the problem is and what are the likely causes. Some of the prevalent assumptions that are widely held to be true would include:

  • Mental & emotional problems are caused by disturbances in brain and body-chemistry
  • External 'stress-factors' produce long-lasting changes in how people feel
  • Early childhood trauma creates lifelong psychological suffering
  • Some people are predisposed towards mental illness due to personality traits or inherited genetic tendencies
  • Modern life is inherently stressful, and the best we can hope for is an effective 'coping strategy' to help us along
  • Some people are more resilient than others

Given the variety of supposed causative and contributory factors, it is unsurprising that there are literally hundreds of different treatment approaches, even for the same kinds of suffering. The fact that the different 'schools' of psychology, psychiatry and self-help tend to contradict each other is a reflection of the lack of basic, fundamental principles upon which a coherent model for practice could be built.

As human consciousness evolves, new discoveries emerge periodically that show previously-held assumptions to be partially or wholly untrue. Despite initial resistance from the establishment of the day, eventually the newly-uncovered truth becomes widely accepted because it enables new and more effective solutions to be found for what seemed like intractable problems. What was thought to be impossible according to existing theories suddenly becomes possible in the light of a new understanding.

In his seminal work The Principles of Psychology, first published in 1890, William James drew attention to the fact that the field of psychology did not yet have any true principles to rest upon, likening it to the fields of chemistry and physics in medieval times. He postulated that one day, when such psychological principles had been discovered and realized on a large scale, it would be the most important advancement in human consciousness since the discovery of fire.

A New Paradigm for Mental Health

In 1973, a man named Sydney Banks uncovered the 'missing link' in our understanding of how psychological suffering gets created, and how it can be healed. Through his own direct insight, Sydney Banks was freed from chronic insecurity and was able to articulate the principles that underpin mental and emotional health in a way that others could grasp and thereby free themselves from their own suffering.

The radical new understanding that Sydney Banks stumbled upon began to spread via word of mouth under various names, including Health Realisation, Psychology of Mind, Innate Health and the Inside-Out understanding. Today, it is most commonly referred to as the Three Principles of Mind, Thought and Consciousness, and it continues to transform people's lives throughout the world.

In contrast to the complexity and contradictory nature of so many existing psychological theories, the Three Principles provide a simple, consistent foundation that explains what psychological and emotional well-being really is, how it can seem to get lost or damaged, and how it can be regained at any stage in a person's life.

What This New Paradigm Means

Some of the key implications that arise from an understanding of these principles include:

  • Everyone has psychological well-being on the inside, no exceptions
  • Peace of mind and well-being is the natural state of all human beings
  • The past has no power to create ongoing psychological suffering
  • True, lasting psychological and emotional healing occurs via insight and a shift in consciousness, not from techniques, practices or prescriptions
  • Changes in body chemistry are a reflection of a person's state of consciousness, not the cause of it
  • Life events and circumstances cannot create stressful feelings in and of themselves
  • Destructive behaviours and habits arise in response to internal distress, and fall away naturally by themselves when inner peace is restored

After a lifetime working in the field of well-being and personal transformation, the Three Principles understanding has formed the basis of all my work since 2011. I was fortunate to train with two of the pioneers in this field, Dr Mark Howard and Cathy Casey, and was inspired by the simplicity, consistency and sustainability of a principles-based approach.

To date, many thousands of people have regained their mental and emotional health through insightfully realizing the truth of these simple principles. As yet, however, they have not been realized on a large scale such that the transformation that William James predicted would come true.

About the Workshop

This two-part workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of the Three Principles in relation to mental and emotional health. It will be invaluable for anyone who is ready to explore the potential for well-being that exists beyond the limitations of the 'current thinking' on this topic, and will be suitable for professionals and non-professionals alike.

The first day will focus on the simple foundation that the principles provide, which corrects all of the popular misunderstandings about psychological and emotional health and reveals the true potential for healing that is available to everyone. Part One is particularly recommended for those who are new to this understanding.

On the second day we will explore how an understanding of the principles can be so powerful and helpful in some of the commonest areas of psychological suffering such as anxiety, depression, trauma and self-confidence. If you are new to the Three Principles, it is strongly recommend that you attend Part One first in order to gain the most value from Part Two.
